I realized that I needed a vacation. So, decided to unplug and take some time off to catch up on chores around the west coast and finally wrapped it up on Jan 4,2009 . We started on Dec 24, 2008 drove from Phoenix to Lasvegas, SFO, Portland, SFO and back to Phoenix.
I love hanging out with friends and extended family, because it gets my mind off of every day life. But, the last leg of drive from SFO to Phoenix, I decided to drive alone and completely unplug from all electronics and get back to the basics of driving and navigation with out GPS, which is a 14 hours drive.
This trip restored confidence in my abilities, provided me with peace and solitude to contemplate life, and prepare me for the return back to the real world - Professional life.
So, you are probably wondering what the relevance of my vacation is to Professional life?
It's all about the basics. Without a solid foundation of basic skills and knowledge of the discipline then a person's ability to fully engage in all the tasks associated with professional life are limited. There are some who mistakenly assume that professional life is a smooth sailing once we get a job; and that may be the case in some limited situations. But, with the current economic situations, the professional jobs require professionals who possess a rich understanding of the system and who are also proficient using basic skills and tools of the trade. Understanding the basics enables a person to better understand the how and why, and provides a base for approaching a problem from multiple rational perspectives given a specific context.
